This is a short guide to 20 areas of literacy that deserve greater emphasis inside and outside of classrooms — some of the many things we may not learn in school, but that we all need to know.

These literacies include areas like:

  • Digital Media & Technology
  • Communicating & Amplifying Ideas
  • Understanding Data
  • Experimentation
  • Storytelling
  • Systems & Networks
  • Design
  • Business, Entrepreneurship, & Value
  • Community
  • Creativity & Curiosity

And many more! (You can find the complete list here.)

About the Guide

This guide is aimed at the special sweet spot where kids and adults collide, designed to be useful on multiple levels.

It includes not only brief descriptions of each topic but — my favorite part! — links to 100+ fascinating and thought-provoking resources to spark learning and discussion — essays, articles, lists, lessons, interviews, blog posts, and more that you can access free online.

Use this guide to:

  • Introduce yourself to areas outside your expertise
  • Extend those introductions to friends, children, and other loved ones
  • Spark some fun discussions
  • Or all of the above!

The guide is currently offered at a “pay-what-you-want” price. If you can afford it, I'd much appreciate a few bucks to offset the dozens of hours (and years of reading and research) that have gone into putting it together — but my main priority is to share it as widely as possible.

So, you can pick it up now for zero dollars, $$$, or anywhere in between!
